about

Everyone makes such a big deal about the permanence of tattoos. But when a friend with a tattoo died, I was struck by how ephemeral they are - the family was stuck sorting through all the random possessions he'd acquired, but the tattoo was gone with his body.

I have four tattoos, for the record! One of them is a banjola on my knee. (I am not from Alabama, however.)

lyrics

So the "E thing" chord is G, E, Bb, B, E. G minor 6th? E minor 11th? I'm terrible at chord names.

Unicorns, dolphins, the name of your lover Am D
Crosses and kanji you don't understand Am D
Detailed depictions of Kraft peanut butter Am D
Telling the world it's your favourite brand Am D

These are all tattoos I for one would not choose Am D

But you know when you've died, all the things that you've tried Am D
Your possessions and sins, your confessions and skin Am D
Will be gone with your body. Am D
Why shouldn't that body be covered in colours and lines and tattoos? Am D Am D
Shouldn't you get to choose? D E E thing (o2302) E

People see your tattoos and they ask "Aren't you worried Am D
What people will say or your children will think? Am D
As if out of all the regrets in your lifetime Am D
The ones that will hurt would be made out of ink. Am D

We are free to make errors, mistakes and bad judgements Am D
In all the less obvious parts of our lives. Am D
And they leave a mark too just not where you can see them Am D
Invisible scars from intangible knives Am D

But you know when you've died, all the things that you've tried Am D
Your possessions and sins, your confessions and skin Am D
Will be gone with your body. Am D
Why shouldn't that body be covered in colours and lines and tattoos? Am D Am D
Shouldn't you get to choose? D E E thing (o2302) E E thing (o2302)
