about

My annual winter song! This year for a change it is not gloomy and depressing. This winter I have spent a lot of happy time with far-away friends, and the way they shine at me from across a great distance reminds me of the peculiar sideways quality of light winter sunshine has.

Update, September 2012: The original version of this song had slightly different words. I have changed the chorus to take out the word gypsy, which is a hurtful ethnic slur. I am ashamed and so sorry that I let this song stand here so long as it was. I should have known better, but now I do, and so I have fixed it as best I can. I think the new line expresses what I felt better anyhow. I hope you enjoy the new recording! Love, Brooke.

lyrics

Summer's light is warm and bright and dense G - - Dm
and covers you as butter covers bread, as a quilt enfolds a bed Dm C Gsus4 - G
In its thick embrace you cannot sense G - - Dm
How rare and fine, how far away, are things that aren't in front of you today Dm C Dm C G

But we stand on the horizon casting shadows G Gadd9 Dm C
And dance on distant walls we never thought that we could reach G Gadd9 Dm C
We stand on the horizon casting shadows G Gadd9 Dm C
Reciting soaring poems in the ravens' rusty speech G Gadd9 Dm C
We stand on the horizon casting shadows G Gadd9 Dm C
And dance the kind of wandering a questing heart will teach Dm C Gsus4 G
Gsus4 C
Winter's light cannot replace a fire
For winter's touch is pale and loose and thin, is a cold and bitter wind
But winter's light ignites an inner pyre
For it strikes you from the side, and shadows in your heart may leap astride

We stand on the horizon casting shadows
And dance on distant walls we never knew that we could reach
We stand on the horizon casting shadows
Reciting soaring poems in the ravens' rusty speech
We stand on the horizon casting shadows
And dance the kind of wandering a questing heart will teach

I have loved the summer's radiant gleam
But when a lover reaches for my hand, I lead them to the frozen lands
For shadows meeting join without a seam
And mere absence cannot part what is joined in winter's shadowed heart

We stand on the horizon casting shadows
And dance on distant walls we never knew that we could reach
We stand on the horizon casting shadows
Reciting soaring poems in the ravens' rusty speech
We stand on the horizon casting shadows
And dance the kind of wandering a questing heart will teach
